Wong Kok birthday tea

PA230943

We recently celebrated a birthday at Wong Kok and were pleasantly surprised that there was a ‘birthday tea’ on the menu.  What really impressed us was the size of the tea.  It was as huge as (please excuse the expression) a small waste paper bin! (Literally!)

It came with glasses for everyone at the table and can easily serve 8-10 regular sized glasses!  When it arrived at our table, I noticed that other patrons in the restaurant started to turn in our direction.  A little while later, a few other similar giant mugs appeared at their tables.

So, if you are celebrating a birthday anytime soon (it is valid 3 days before right up to 3 days after any birthday), do visit Wong Kok Hong Kong style restaurant for this FREE treat (yes, absolutely FREE with dining purchases above RM30).  Remember to bring several buddies and good tea drinkers along to finish the humongous glass of milk tea :)

Happy wok meal

IMAG0136

IMAG0134

We savoured Taiwanese food set for RM7.90.  Each set included a main (fish/chicken/beef) rice set and a drink.

IMAG0142

Our drinks (from left to right): Hot peach green tea and iced passionfruit black tea

   IMAG0145

Crispy Chicken Chop Rice (tasty and crispy.  The condiments were plain and simple while the chicken was thin and crunchy)

IMAG0147 Crispy Fish Fillet Rice (yes, spot the difference!  Same presentation as chicken set meal but with fish.  Fish was juicier and  easier to chew and the overly crunchy chicken).  Both sets had hard boiled eggs were way overcooked and ruined an otherwise simple and palatable dish.

The  restaurant staff were foreign workers who could hardly understand our simple order (which had to be repeated to more senior personnel).  Otherwise, food and dining experience was above average and worthy of a second or third visit.

HotPot at 50% off

IMAG0120

If steamboats are a favourite, then this is deal just for you!  For just RM10, you will get a voucher worth RM20 redeemable at Hotpot Cuisine Family Garden in Cheras.   Selection of food is off the wide menu and you will also have 4 options of soups to choose from: chicken, sweet & sour, curry or porridge.

This cozy restaurant opens for business daily at noon.  Staff were very efficient and very much wanted to please customers.

The variety of food offered ranged from RM2 to RM7 per plate for ala carte.  Set meals for 2 pax started just below RM30.

Individual pots to cook food

The food was tasty and the soup did not have much MSG if any. The fish paste, stuffed meat ball and salmon balls were a hit.  Be prepared to fork out between RM20-25 per person for ala carte.

It is certainly a healthier and cleaner option to have individual bowls to cook our own food.  However, I cannot imagine having families with young children at this restaurant.  The hot soup is constantly at boiling point at several parts of the table and it would be difficult for adults to relax in such an environment.  Hence, the irony to their shop name “Hotpot Cuisine Family Garden”!!

Taiping Ho Chiak, PJ: 3 course-meal @ RM24 for 3 pax!

This deal in SS2 Petaling Jaya offered ayam pongteh, sambal kangkung, lap cheong onion omelette and unlimited soup of the day for 3 pax at RM24.

The restaurant was nestled amongst the residential area of Chow Yang.  The decor of the place left much to be desired – it was a little Peranakan and a little of childrens toys on the side plus a dash of colour here and too much on another side – anyway, you get the drift.

PA090895

Tasty ayam pongteh

PA090897

The sambal kangkung lacked uumph

PA090896

Lap cheong onion omelette was all too ordinary.

The main snag was the small metal wires we found in our rice so although business at this restaurant wasn’t all that brisk, food hygiene was surely not one of their top priority.  This topped by the fact that they allow pets into common dining areas would ensure that we will not be making future visits to this restaurant.

Fix n Mix, Scott Garden

This eatery is located in the West Atrium of Scott Garden – an unfamiliar and currently under populated part of the building.  There was no one at the outlet when we arrived for dinner and business did not pick up when we left.

In any case, we were there to use our RM7.50 vouchers (Value RM15) where we are offered a pasta (cream carbonara or tomato marinara) plus a sandwich (ham/tuna/egg salad) plus a glass of ice lemon tea to wash the feast down!

IMAG0187Ice lemon tea (chilled and reusable the next day if business is slow!) This drink was very mild (ie. watered down) even without ice.

IMAG0190

Spaghetti marinara – ample amount of pasta with mild tomato sauce.  I couldn’t help but feel that this was the diluted and warmed-up version of Prego or Kimball sauce!

IMAG0189

Spaghetti carbonara – canned soup watered down? Very mild and could do with a bit of mushrooms or dressing

IMAG0193

Ham and Egg Sandwiches – yes, both types served on the same plate!  This massive (each measuring 2 handfuls) wholemeal sandwiches were sparingly laced with egg mayonaise and thin slices of ham.  The bread is nice enough but the marjerine on it left an awfully oily/sticky feel.  There were literally 2 pieces of thumbsize lettuce in each sandwich coupled with superthin slices of tomato and cucumber.

It was apparent that the business could barely afford to hire extra staff as the owners were there to see to customers.  However, the food was too plain to pay double (ie. regular prices) to warrant a return visit.
